Today, a filmmaker friend linked me to "Gay Education," a smirk-inducing, animated short (see below). The video's intentions are good but I'm a little worried about some of the scientific theories presented here: The youngest male child is more likely to be gay because his mother's body pumps him with femme-inducing antibodies? Does gay = effeminate? If so, what explains all those butch gay men? The trans movement has taught us that gender expression is distinct from sexuality! What goes on in a mother's body to create a lesbian? What about the queer(ed) first-borns like me? Or the gay only-children?
The cartoon makes a self-reflexive joke about the absence of studies about lesbians but why do all the gay characters in the video have light skin?
Whose agenda is it, anyway, to prove that gayness is natural vs. nurtured? Do the people who consciously choose to be same-sex partnered deserve less rights, respect or props than the people who are convinced they were born that way?
Free will rocks and all consensual sensual touch is natural and divine. Gay love and gay lust exist whether science can back it up or not. Ducks do it. Elephants do it. Humans from a variety of cultures do it. Our community is diverse! Get used to it!
